Has your child been through or witness something terrifying, puzzling or really stressful?

Does your son or daughter seem unhappy or is just acting different?

Are you searching for a way to support your child and assist them recover from a traumatic experience?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you are in the right place. Childhood traumatic stress isn’t always clear, and it can be difficult to tell how much of an influence it’s had on your child at first. You wonder if it has anything to do with what your child witnessed or experienced.  Or maybe your child has experienced some recent big changes in their life.

. Trauma can take many, many different forms such:

  • A death of a loved one
  • Medical trauma.
  • Witnessing domestic violence
  • Victim of physical &/or sexual abuse,
  • Parents recently divorced.
  • Recent car accident
  • Moving to a new city

Parenting a child who has experienced trauma is very challenging and even unclear. As a result, well-meaning adults often misinterpret or become upset with traumatized children. For instance, the depressed, anxious or traumatized child may act out and that behavior misinterpreted. It’s common the adults in their life don’t fully understand the effect of stressful situations on a child’s developing brain. As a mental health professional,  Samonia works with children and families to discover the techniques to understand & cope with  scary and unwanted  emotions.

All children respond differently to the experiences they go through in life.  Some children are able to recover without therapy and others need the support of a certified trauma therapist to guide them towards healing.

At Cultivating Wellness, Samonia has been trained and certified through the North Carolina Child Treatment Program, a partnership between the Duke-UCLA National Center for Child Traumatic Stress; the Center for Child and Family Health; and the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in helping children as young as five recover from trauma.
